in Motion

Where Beijing Opera, parametric design and the moving body meet.

Developed at the Royal College of Art, the project reimagines the Beijing Opera classic Farewell My Concubine through flexible 3D-printed pleated costumes. Translating traditional pleating into parametric structures, it explores how material reshapes the relationship between costume, body and movement. The film follows the designs through fittings, rehearsals and live performance, documenting how they respond on stage.

THE STILLS

Structure, gesture and the human work behind performance.

The photographs move from close moments of fitting and adjustment to the heightened language of the stage. Together, they show how the printed pleats hold their geometry, respond to movement and become part of each performer’s expression.
